Joel Burns - It Get's Better Project
To see a political public figure stand up in support of gay teens and share his own story was a remarkable moment. Then to see the support of the people there at the meeting as they gave him a standing ovation was just as touching and meaningful.
I just wanted to take a moment to recognize his bravery and applaud him for standing up for what he believes in, in spite of the controversy it could cause. He became the hero so many kids, gay or straight, need right now.
NaNoWriMo

For the entire month of November participants have to write a 50,000 word novel. In the sake of meeting that goal things like writing style, editing and plot no longer need to take precedence. All that counts is cranking out those 50,000 words by midnight November 30th and that you crank it hard. As the site put it, "December is for editing."
I'm excited because this will be my first time participating in NaNoWriMo and my first time ever trying to write a novel. I have a vague idea of what I want to write about. A year ago I wrote a short story that I had forgotten about and came across last month. When I read it I remember thinking, "why didn't I write more?" But I don't know for sure if I'm going to stick with that one. I plan to sit down today or tomorrow and build an outline and see if I find the story interesting enough to build on. What I do know is, I'm going to win. I like a challenge and when I set a goal for myself I take it seriously and this is one of those times.
If anyone else is participating I wish you tons of luck and you should definitely be my writing buddy on the site!

Sara Bareilles
Songs like "Uncharted" or "Love Song" or "Gonna Get Over You" instantly made me fall in love with them.
While others like "Gravity" or "Breathe Again" have me diving for my iPod or laptop to change the song to prevent reliving painful memories and emotions I would rather stay forgotten. But while those songs leave me feeling too vulnerable to listen to them often, the realization that I'm not the only she has pulled those emotions out of is what makes them so great.
A few weeks ago I saw the music video for "Gravity" for the first time and fell back in love with the song. So, enjoy.

Glee How I Love Thee, Let Me Count The Ways

My head about exploded through the roof at this wonderful news. I have been a huge Rocky Horror fan since high school when one of my friends took me to see the show performed live as an early birthday present. In a way this show kind of made me confront my sexuality. You may be scratching your head in curiosity so I'll explain.
The first time I saw "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" I wondered why I found a guy who cross dresses hotter than any other guy I had ever seen/met before. I was about 15 at the time and had never had a crush on a guy or been even remotely interested in dating one. So I asked my self that very question until I came up with a possible answer, "maybe it's the clothes?"

After that, I allowed myself to start to open up and ask the question I refused to even think about before, "What if I'm attracted to women?" The town I grew up in was extremely conservative so living in a place with that kind of mind set it rubbed off, and as a young teen I was very conservative. It took moving nearly halfway across the country to a bigger city with far more culture to learn that being gay wasn't the end of the world. And even then, it didn't happen all at once, it took time to even work up the courage to confront the very idea of being gay.
By the time I asked myself that major question, I had joined my high school girls basketball team and came in contact with what I thought was my very first lesbian, in the form of my basketball coach. After that there was no avoiding it, because at the end of the season, unless I'm forgetting somebody, of the 8 girls on the Varsity team 3 were gay, 1 was Bi and then there was me, straddling the fence (heh, straddling), not knowing where I belonged. So essentially the majority of the team was gay and I couldn't hide from it anymore.
I tested the waters with my mom and gave her the "I think I might be bi" speech. I was 16 by that point and still didn't know if I was gay. The problem was I certainly found women far more attractive to men, but I never really had any kind of emotional feelings toward a girl. A few months later a new girl was hired in at my work and I developed a pretty strong crush and I knew for sure. I was totally gay. I came out to my mom, ("Mom, I'm gay." "So?") not too long afterward.
So in my mind "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" will always have massive amounts of my love for helping a once entirely closeted teenage girl eventually discover a pretty important part of herself.
As such, I cannot freaking wait until episode 5 of "Glee".

Calvin and Hobbes, Meet Han and Chewie

I guess some could argue it's a Star Wars shirt with a Calvin and Hobbes reference but they would lose.
In case you were wondering I totally bought the shirt. I'm even debating about buying a second one in case the first one gets ruined. Hey, don't laugh. Calvin and Hobbes lover for life, yo.

Cee-Lo Green's "F**K You" Parody
Recently, I came across this awesomely geeky paradoy of Cee-Lo's lyric video.
I'm definitely interested to see if his album, The Lady Killer, lives up to the single if so I'll be the first in line to buy it at my local electronics store.

New series premiers and early cancellations.

If there's one thing about me that has always remained consistent and that is my love for strong female characters.

"Hawaii Five-O" continues to be somewhat hit and miss. While Scott Caan, Grace Park and Daniel Dae Kim do an awesome job playing their characters, it's Alex O'Loughlin and his character Detective Steve McGarret that I have a bone to pick with.

In the category of completely unexpected, one show "Raising Hope" has come out to be interesting and funny.

"Raising Hope" is about a young single father as he tries to raise a baby with the help of his very eccentric family, after his baby mama ends up on death row. If that doesn't get your attention I don't know what will, but so far it makes for a fun mix of comedy and ridiculousness.
In other news, shows that have been canceled already are "Lonestar" and "My Generation".

Previously, I talked about how I was looking forward to watching "My Generation" and sadly it was very disappointing.

With the Fall TV season now in full swing I'll be cheering on my favorite shows in hopes that they'll avoid the axe and be renewed, and so far "No Ordinary Family" will be at the top of my list for new shows being renewed.

Chuck, Glee and Dexter again?!

On the other hand, Glee seemed to go on a little bit of a hiatus for the Britney/Brittany episode. I'm not saying I didn't like it, on the contrary without realizing it was possible I have fallen even more in love with Heather Morris' portrayal of Brittany S. Pierce and would gladly volunteer to have her babies. The episode just made me feel like I was in a bit of a drug induced haze the entire time I was watching it.

Next week, Glee finds religion in the form of a grilled cheese Jesus. This should be interesting.

Chuck me full of Glee and call me Dexter
As I sadly wave goodbye to my summer shows, Rizzoli & Isles, Drop Dead Diva and Covert Affairs, my feelings of sorrow can't help but be short lived as I warmly embrace the return of my favorite fall shows.

*Side Bar* (Since when did sexting mean "sexual writing"? I was always of the opinion that the definition of "sexting" was a shortened version of "sex texting" or "sexy texting" or if you proper English speaking people would have it, "sexual text messaging". Anyway, I could probably debate this issue with myself for hours so I'm just going to stop now and leave that question for you to answer for me. ) *End Side Bar*
Additionally, the fanboy-head-exploding guest appearance of E4's Olivia Munn, was fun, but if you blinked you might have missed it and should immediately re-watch the episode. So as the fall season progresses I look forward to seeing more of "Chuck" and Sarah Walker and Sarah Connor - I mean,...Chuck's mom.
Next up...I wave my gleek flag.

First, is it just me or does it look like Lea Michelle's lips have grown? In the first minute of the episode I was more distracted by that than the Jew-fro which is saying something.
Second, nationals? Really, writers of "Glee"? Why didn't you just come out and say it?
News Flash: McKinley High's New Directions Beat Vocal Adrenaline at Regionals to Move on to Nationals in NYC.
Way to give that plot line away.
I'm also interested to see where things are going with the two new characters, Sam and Sunshine. (Did anyone else think Sam looked a lot like Maxxie from Skins in that first shot of him?
I had to do a double take before I noticed enough differences.) Other than that, I'm glad to once again have Brittany's one-liners, Kurt's adorableness and Sue Sylvester's awesomely biting dialogue back in my day-to-day life.

From what I can discern from the trailers I threw out the theories that it was all a dream, a la "Dallas". And have now moved on to the theory that one of the plots is going to be Dexter having to fight for custody of Aster and Cody from Rita's mother, putting a strain on his serial killer lifestyle yet again.
It's going to be nice for fans to finally get some answers and to once again embrace our inner Dark Defenders.
As far as new shows go, a few look interesting. I watched the pilot of Hawaii Five-O, and while I was too young to watch the original when it aired, I'm not even sure I was born yet, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to check back in with Grace Park (Boomer/Athena from "Battestar Galactica") who will be playing a barely out of the academy police officer in the special unit and a regular on the show.

Thursday a new show called "My Generation" premiers. From what I can tell it follows a group of people 10 years after their graduation from high school, contrasting where they dreamed and planned to be then, to where they are now. I'm hoping it turns out to be as interesting as the trailers make it look.
Last but not least, thanks to iTune's Free Episode link, I downloaded the pilot episode of "The Event". While I originally had no particular interest in the show, and the price couldn't get any better, it was the one line review that called it the love child of "Lost" and "24" that made me laugh and ultimately pushed me off the fence and decide to watch the pilot at least.
So there you have it, my weekly line up of shows in one post. But if you think you'll know where to find me most nights between 8 and 10pm then think again. Thanks to the wonderful invention of on-demand with Comcast, I can now watch most of my shows whenever it best suits me. Ah, the wonder of technology. Now all I need is an iPad and a Slingbox and I can watch my shows whenever and WHEREver I please. Looks like I better start writing Santa early this year.

Getting Back in the Groove

Other than work, I've been focusing on a couple of my fall projects I outlined in this post. The one I'm focusing on the most right now is "honing my photography skills". When I got back from Canadia I talked to one of the guys I work with, he hosts his own online show as well as does event coordination and promotion. When he found out I dabbled in photography he got really excited because his daughter was having a birthday party that he wanted pictures for. So as a favor to him I did them for free as way to show him I really am a decent photographer. When he saw the pictures he absolutely loved them and has been passing my name around to some of the people in his circle since then.
Today, I got a call from one of his DJ friends who was looking to do a photo shoot for two album covers and head shots for his girlfriend. I'm excited because this will be my first real job as a photographer and not just as a favor to friends kind of thing. Last week I took some of my cousin's senior pictures so I'm really hoping to get together a portfolio of some of my photography to start showing people and maybe drawing in more jobs.
This is something I've been thinking about a lot lately, and if it takes off, I'm wondering if I can turn it into a part time business. It's just a thought for now, because there would be so much I would have to do, such as applying for a business license and all that craziness. But I'm keeping it in mind for now.

Hello Insomnia, My Old Friend
49 QUESTIONS YOU’VE LIKELY NEVER ANSWERED.
1. What’s your favorite episode of Sex and the City?
I've never seen a full episode, so I wouldn't know.
2. What’s a big misconception about you?
That I'm not very friendly when I meet someone at first, when really I just get lost in observing people.
3. If you could have a free pass from your significant other, is there a celebrity that you wouldn’t say no to, if they wanted to sleep with you?
Lena Heady, or maybe Jordana Brewster, no wait, Katee Sackhoff. Can I just have all three?
4. Have you ever taken an anti-depressant for it’s intended purposes?
No, I've never taken anti-depressants. And even the people I've seen take them, I'm of the opinion they don't work most of the time anyway.
5. Do you like your neighbors?
Sure, the neighbor on the right is really nice and mows my lawn if I haven't had a chance to get to it during the week. Although the neighbors on the left are nice enough when I talk to them, I do get tired of hearing their screaming fights nearly every day.
6. What are the last 3 CD’s you’ve listened to?
3OH3!'s new album, La Roux, and Eminem's new album Recovery.
7. Have you ever had sex with more than 1 person in a single day?
Nope.
8. What’s the last food/drink purchase you wanted your money back on?
The Southern style chicken sandwich at McDonald's that my friend talked me into trying. It tasted even worse than Crap-Fil-A.
9. Who is your favorite day time television talk show host?
Probably Ellen DeGeneres. If I'm home during the day and I see her show on I always watch it.
10. Do you like “big boy toys”?
What the hell are "big boy toys"?? I guess I would say I love my laptop and riding my uncle's Jet Ski's if that counts.
11. Do you sleep with your closet door open or closed?
Open, it makes it easier when I have to jump out of bed to get dressed five minutes before I'm supposed to leave for work.
12. Have you ever used sex to get your way in a situation?
Nope.
13. What type of church do you attend?
None, I think religion is deeply flawed and people are even more flawed, so I find it very difficult to sit there and listen to someone preach to me about how I should be living my life. Over the years I've constructed my own spiritual beliefs that I'm happy with.
14. Would you rather have a bucket stuck on your head or a bucket stuck on your hand for 24 hours and why?
Definitely on my hand, I would go crazy if I couldn't see because I had some stupid bucket stuck on my head.

I love having a dog around, but I look forward to seeing the tigers at the zoo. Also, I love seeing the wild dolphins at the beach near my moms house when I visit her in Florida.
20. If you had to either milk a cow for an hour or shovel cow poop with a large soup spoon for an hour, which would you choose?
Milk the cow for sure. I would not be able to stop puking long enough to shovel the cow poop if I had to. I'm a city girl and not ashamed of it.
21. Do you know anyone in the military?

22. Which finger could you do without?
Prbaby either f my ring finger But that d make it reay hard t tye ith ut them (Wow that took a lot longer to type out than I thought it would.)

Yes, it's one of my favorite memories sleeping in a just a sleeping bag staring up at the stars and talking with my friends until we all passed out.
24. Do you think you’ve ever been abducted by aliens and just had it erased from your memory?
Yes, yes I do. I've tried to tell people this, but they won't listen, they just keep giving me these pills saying it'll make it all better. But to make up for it they gave me this really cool white coat with these straps and two of my very own best friends that love to play tag and hide and go seek all the time and...Oh look! Here they come now in their van!
25. Do you know anyone who’s name starts with an M who makes you laugh a lot?

34. Do you have a bad temper?
No, not unless you're the asshole who sees the lane merging sign and decides to floor it and pass everyone already lined up to cut over in front of them. Word of advice, it better not be me you're trying to push your way into traffic in front of because I will not budge. I have insurance and you'll be the one at fault, so please, do me the favor of getting me a new car.
35. When was the last time you used the restroom?
Uh, what?
36. Would you rather have the ability to make time stand still and start again at your whim or to be able to reverse time and do things over?

What's with all these significant other questions?

Yes, growing up as a Navy brat I learned to make friends with the other military kids quickly.
40. What’s something about feminine hygiene products that doesn’t make sense to you?
I don't know. But I just have to say, "stirrups"? Really? They couldn't have thought of something better than to make it sound like you're mounting a horse?

Any of the Peewee Herman movies.
42. Do you worry about burglars?
No, but considering what city I live I probably should.

44. Would you ever name your dog Mr. Barky Von Schnauzer?
Hell to the no.

I used to be pretty good at Texas Hold 'Em, but it's been a while since I played.
47. Have you ever wanted to swim in a pool of Jello?
Haha, I used to joke about filling a pool with blue jello, but I don't think I would want to swim in it.
48. Have you ever physically hurt an object out of anger?
Huh? How can you hurt an object? I've punched a pillow to release some frustration or kicked something, but I doubt it hurt them in anyway since neither object has a nervous system.
49. Do you have a friend or family member who has a septum piercing?
Hah, no but my grandfather doesn't have any cartilage in that part of his nose from a botched surgery and I remember as a kid, always making him stick things through there and laughing like a goon.

Back From Canada
Unfortunately, the downside to having so much fun and being so busy was that I couldn't update my blog at all. I started out with the best of intentions but that fizzled quickly once I realized I had zero time to do any of it. On the up side, I socialized, drank, worked...HARD, partied harder, made out, networked, chilled, and so much more. I'm still in awe of how great this trip was.
Instead of giving an entire rundown of everything, I'll just reference a few of the highlights.
Highlight #1: The Light Show
The last night we were all in Ottawa, a handful of our group walked up to Parliament Hill to watch a light show they do every year using Center Block as the back drop. It was sad, but at the same time heartwarming because after the show it really hit us that we were all going home the next day and we took tons of pictures and everyone was hugging each other like crazy.
What still makes me laugh about that night though was the horsing around we did. At one point I got tackled by one of the guys somewhat unintentionally. We were all getting up from the lawn to leave, I was the first to stand up and as one of the guys started to get up I jokingly pushed him back on the ground and tried to jump out of grabbing distance. Before I could get away he jumped up, tried to trip me, but his foot got tangled up in my legs and we ended up falling to the ground at the same time with him on top of my back. I'm only 5'3'' and this guy was nearly 6' so the size difference made it a little uncomfortable but I was laughing so hard I barely even noticed.
After that, one of the other girls and I were debating on whether or not we could pick him up. That probably wasn't the best idea, consider he and I had been drinking so we were both a little wobbly. Of course, as we tried to pick him up, we dropped him/he fell backwards because his balance was shot and we had overestimated how strong we were. Luckily he wasn't that far off the ground at that point so we were all laughing about it as we helped him stand back up. It was definitely a good memory of our trip.
Highlight #2: Making Out.....!!!
Ah, I can't even begin to describe why this is one of the highlights because it says it all in the headline. So the story behind making out was, one of the girls in the program came out as Bi, which I didn't think anything of it because a lot of college girls are Bi until graduation.
Well, the first weekend we all hung out and drank, everybody got buzzed or a little drunk. We were all having a good time, and I noticed that the Bi girl got a little touchy-feely with me. At first I didn't realize it, everyone was either hugging or bumping into each other or had their arm around someone in a strictly friendly way, when I noticed she was really leaning into me quite a bit. So I thought to myself "Hmmm, this will be interesting to see how far she's really willing to push it." Once the evening began to wind down, we were sitting on a couch talking and she had laid her head on my shoulder, and I absently started playing with her hand and intertwining our fingers together and I noticed she didn't pull away. After that it was pretty relaxed and we just cuddled the rest of the night until I fell asleep with my head in her lap listening to her talk.
I know what you're thinking, where does the making out come in? I'll get to that I promise.
For the next couple of days, I noticed we really hadn't had the chance to hang out and honestly I wasn't too concerned, we were both just enjoying each others company. But eventually I caught on to the fact that she was keeping her distance because she expected me to chase her. She would come up to me and wrap her arms around me and the moment I would start to reciprocate she would pull away.
If you know me at all then you can probably guess my reaction to that. I flat out didn't bite. I don't play those kinds of games. If you like me, fine. If I like you, even better. But don't throw me intentionally mixed signals.
Being the queen of non-verbals that I am, in response, I looked at her, raised my eyebrow, rolled my eyes and walked away. I remember, because that's the look I give everyone when I'm tired of dealing with their shit. As the rest of the week went by I didn't give the situation much thought. When she gave me a hug, or tried to link her arm with mine I made sure not to react so that it was obvious to her, I wasn't interested.
Eventually, she flat out asked me why I didn't like her. And I was honest, I told her it wasn't that I didn't like her, it was that I had no intention of playing a game of cat and mouse with someone and ruining the last few weeks I was in Canada. I could tell she was thinking about what I said, but I didn't wait around for a response before I was off enjoying myself with a couple people from our group. That may sound cold, but I really was there to enjoy myself and not worry about that sort of thing.
The next weekend, a few of us had planned to go out to a bar and drink a bit and she asked if she could come along. We were of the opinion the more the merrier so she was welcome to join us. I had pretty much forgotten about the drunk cuddling by that point. Little did I know, the moment we were alone at the bar, she would hit me with the news that ever since we hung out that first weekend she really wanted to make out with me. And of course, me being the thoughtful, educated, witty person that I am, I came up with an appropriate response. I laughed. Naturally, I apologized for laughing, but I couldn't help it.
Think about it for a moment and put yourself in my shoes. Here was this pretty girl sitting next to me that I wasn't particularly interested in, who, after a couple weeks of throwing around mixed signals, decided to come on to me while she was drunk, after we had only cuddled previously, while also drunk. Coincidence? I didn't think so, and I told her as much.
She denied it, of course, and tried to reaffirm her bisexuality by telling me about girls she had been involved with. All of which I noticed were linked to nights she had been drinking heavily, so it really didn't help her case, in my opinion. After she finished, we had gone through a couple more drinks and I was pretty drunk and feeling a bit reckless so I decided to call her out. If she was so adamant about proving she was Bi to me, then why didn't we just make out?
Again, I know what you're thinking. How would making out drunk in a bar prove that she wasn't only interested in girls when she was drunk? Truthfully? It wouldn't, but I was drunk, and in the mood to make out with someone. She was attractive and available, and it sounded like a good way to prove what she was saying at the time. AndIwasjustreallyinthemoodtomakeout.
At first I didn't think she would go for it. She kind of looked at me then looked around at all of the other people in the bar, looked at me again and responded with, "Now? Here?" I shrugged my shoulders and asked, "Why not?" I watched her as she thought about it for a moment and then I saw her build up her resolve and say, "Okay."
I had every intention of starting the kiss out slow and giving her a chance to change her mind, because I wasn't going to push her into something she would be uncomfortable with. I leaned in slowly but before I had the chance to kiss her, she put her hand around the back of my neck and pulled me the rest of the way in for a surprisingly hot make out session. I don't know how long we made out for, but I remember my immediate thought once we came up for air was, "wow, that was better than I thought it was going to be." I will hand it to the girl, she definitely knew how to kiss.
After that, all it took was a look and a grin from her, for me to realize she was thinking the same thing, and we were back to making out again. The rest of the night progressed like that and we made out between whenever people would come back to the table. All in all it was a hell of a lot of fun, and definitely one of the highlights of my trip to Canada.

Oh Em Gee I'm Still Alive!
I leave for my internship in Canada in roughly 5 or so hours and I still need to finish packing. I'm such a bad procrastinator, I tried to pack early but it just seemed like I needed to bring more and more stuff. I'm such a girl, I'm barely going to be gone a month and I feel I need to bring the entire contents of my bedroom with me, including the kitchen sink.
Since I'm going to be completely focused on my internship for the next few weeks, I have decided to start a separate blog for my family so they can keep up with everything I'm doing. I'll be posting pictures of my shenanigans and possibly even a couple videos. So go here, here, here and here if you're interested in taking a peek at what I'll be up to.
